How Long does a Mattress Last?
Mattresses have a long shelf life, which is why they’re considered an investment purchase. A majority of mattresses last for 7-10 years but can last longer depending on care. However, a memory foam mattress can last well over 10 years due to the supportive and durable high-density foam that makes these mattresses special. With proper care and a mattress protector, natural latex mattresses can also last well over a decade.
How to Clean a Mattress?
When was the last time you cleaned your current mattress? We often forget, but giving your mattress a thorough clean is a necessary chore that prolongs its longevity. You start by stripping it of its sheets and vacuuming the entire surface with the upholstery attachment on your vacuum. Make sure to get deep into the crevices of your bed frame and headboard to capture all the dust bunnies. Then, scan the mattress cover for any stain and spills that you need to spot clean. A good upholstery or enzyme cleaner will make sure that stains disappear in a flash. To give your mattress a nice, refreshing scent, deodorize with baking soda. Don’t be stingy, you can use upwards of a whole box of baking soda during this step. After the mattress has been thoroughly covered, let it sit for a few hours — it’s best to do this task before you leave for work so your bed is all clean by the time you get home. Once you’re ready, vacuum up the baking soda and top off your deodorized bed with clean sheets and other bedding.
What Size Mattress to Buy?
There are several mattress sizes out there on the market, but the sizes you need for your home ultimately depend on your personal preference and your intended purpose. A Twin mattress is a great option for small kids to grow into their teens. If your child needs more length opt for a Twin XL, which is the standard mattress size for college dorms. This bed size is also a great option for single adults who have a smaller, cramped room. A Full mattress is wider than a Twin but smaller than a Queen, making it ideal for single adults or a couple that doesn’t mind snuggling up during the night. The Queen size mattress is the most popular size since it’s perfect for both single adults and couples to sprawl and sleep in. Coming in with an additional 16 inches of width is the King. This mattress is the same height as a queen but provides plenty of space for sleeping, watching movies and cuddling with your fur babies.
