How To: Style Your Home with Wall Décor

The decor you hang on your walls not only serve as the icing on your design cake, but they also tell the story of who you are and what you love. Here’s a guide on how to make styling your home with wall décor a little easier, all while bringing a dose of culture and personality to your space!

Start by choosing a piece that incorporates shades of colour that are already present in the room, pulling the entire look together with the 60-30-10 Rule. It's important to remember that 60% is the main colour of the room, 30% is the secondary colour, and 10% is the accent colour seen in accents such as throw pillows, accessories, and wall décor.

Don't forget to choose colours based on the mood and effect you want to create for the room. Lighter colors generally create an illusion of a larger and brighter space, while dark colors are sophisticated and warm; giving a more intimate appearance.

When decorating your home, it is important to take into account the scale of the wall décor in relation to the room and the furniture that’s in it. If you go too big, the piece may overwhelm the space, while going too small may cause your room to look bare. As a general rule to remember, make sure the particular piece takes up at least 1/2 - 2/3 the width of the piece of furniture. When in doubt, a tad bigger is always better.

Always give your wall décor the space to sparkle on their own! By leaving plenty of space between pieces, you give them room to stand on their own without being out of context. If the subject matter is connected, such as family photos or a grouping of shelves, a general rule of thumb is two inches between larger pieces or an inch and a half between smaller pieces.

A common mistake among many is hanging wall decor too high or too low, making the space feel disproportionate. A tip that gallery owners and museum curators swear by is the “60 inches on center” rule, meaning you measure up to 60 inches from the ground to find the spot where the center of the art should be on the wall.

The perfect way to show off an entire collection of your favourite wall decor is a gallery wall! In order for it to be successful, it’s important to take into consideration how the different elements will play off each other. Simply start with a central or dominant piece, and add additional pieces around it. Don’t be afraid to mix various shapes and textures!
